Description
There is no evidence of organized religious life in the earliest accounts of the Scriptures. The nearest approach to it was the family. The father acted as a priest and leader in the worship of God. This seems to be the case with Adam. With the organization of the nation under Moses, the religious life of Israel underwent a change. The twelve tribes were organized into a nation, a people of God. This theocracy involved the total life of the people, their political, social, and religious life. God was the chief ruler; the priests, kings, and prophets were merely the executors of God’s will. The bond of this union was circumcision, the law, and the tabernacle and temple worship.
With the coming of Christ and his rejection by the nation of Israel, God set Israel aside for this age and founded the church of Jesus Christ. The following volume concerns itself with such matters as the founding, organization, ordinances, and mission of the church.
